Background VoicesVoices for Justice: The Enduring Legacy of the Latino Press in the U.S. commemorates the bicentennial of Latino journalism in the United States with a wide range of programs documenting a journalism legacy that began with the nation’s first Latino newspaper, El Misisipí, founded in New Orleans in September 1808. From September 2008 through September 2009, Voices for Justice will use multi-media and public programs to tell the story of the establishment, development and current growth of the U.S. Latino press.  More Information...


Bicenntenial VoicesBicentennial- In 1808, El Misisipí newspaper was founded in New Orleans in support of the movements for independence from Spain of the emerging Spanish American nations. 
In 1812, La Gaceta de Texas was founded in Nacogdoches, Texas, as a spearhead for the founding of the first Republic of Texas. In 1824, philosopher-novelist Father Félix Varela founded El Habanero in Philadelphia to militate for independence of Cuba. From these origins in political activism, the Latino press went on to serve as the intellectual and cultural center of Latino communities from coast to coast.  More Information...


Periodicals VoicesPeriodicals.- The complete history of Latino newspapers is provided here, along with a comprehensive, annotated list of the newspapers published in the United States up to 1960. Click here for a study of the leading personalities, newspapers, magazines, and issues concerning the press created by native Hispanic journalists and writers of the United States as well as immigrant journalists and political exiles who used the United States as a base for their providing intellectual rationale for their political movements in their homelands.  Also included here is a timeline for Latino journalism in the United States.
Multimedia VoicesMultimedia.- Included here are a photo gallery, videos and audio interviews relating to the history of Latino journalism.  Also included are teacher guides and other ancillary materials, as well as links to other online sites that have been selected for their correctness and cultural authenticity. Here, too, are links to various currently operating newspapers and periodicals.
