Combatting Childhood Obesity Through Healthier Advertising Policy
WHO combats obesity-related illnesses by advocating for "healthier" marketing to children
Non-communicable illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, heart and lung disease, are causing premature death in poorer countries. For that reason, the World Health Organization (WHO) is working to prevent the spread of such illnesses through the regulation of advertising of unhealthy foods. According to Jonathan Lynn, of Reuters, leading companies like Coca Cola, General Mills, McDonald’s and Pepsico, among others, “agreed to draw a code of conduct and committed not to market unhealthy products to children under the age of 12”. WHO and its Member States are designing new policies and revising current ones as a means of curbing the negative impact of junk food marketing on children.
