The soursop is mainly cultivated in the Caribbean, Central & South America, Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia. In the United States, it’s widely grown in Florida and Hawaii. A common ingredient in Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, Venezuelan and Colombian cuisines, the soursop is also a very popular ice cream flavor. According to research conducted by Julia F. Morton of Purdue University, soursop contains approximately 60 calories per 100 grams of fruit. It also contains calcium, phosphorous, and iron. Indigenous cultures believed that the soursop contained curative and medicinal properties that could be used as a diuretic remedy, a sedative, and for the relief of liver ailments.
