The ¡Salud, familia! Program participates in Nuestra Familia, Nuestra Salud
Health Fair offers community an opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyles choices
Arte Público Press’s ¡Salud, familia! Program participated in the Nuestra Familia, Nuestra Salud health fair organized by Children at Risk, Univision KXLN-TV Houston, and Univision Radio on November 1, 2009 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Numerous community organizations came together to offer families education on the importance of health care and healthy living, provide information about services such as immunizations and screenings, and inform families of the resources available in their communities. In addition, the health fair disseminated information on prevention and intervention of critical health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Finally, interactive activities such as cooking demonstrations of nutritious meals and physical fitness activities for parents and children encouraged healthy eating and an active lifestyle.
Nuestra Familia, Nuestra Salud provided health services and educational information to 5,000 community attendees. Through this event, 800 children received flu shots and hundreds of children received immunizations and valuable health screenings. Arte Público Press donated bilingual children’s books to promote healthy reading habits.
The ¡Salud, familia! Program is Arte Público Press's newest publishing and outreach program that encompasses health and nutrition education. Its mission is to expand access to important health and nutrition information through lively and engaging bilingual children’s books. These books will be distributed to low-income Hispanic families with school-aged children residing in urban and rural areas by our partnering organizations. The program is funded by the Kellogg Foundation.
