Graciela Limón, Ray Villareal, and Lucha Corpi participate in panels at NCTE's Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is an American professional organization dedicated to "improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. The Annual Convention was held November 19-22, 2009 in Philadelphia, PA.
Authors Graciela Limón and Lucha Corpi both served as panelists for a panel promoting the incorporation of Hispanic literature in U.S. classrooms.
The session, "Hispanic Readings and Writings that Affect Positive Change: Reading Between the Lines of Cultural and Social Issues," focused on the positive changes that can take place when students are introduced to cultural issues via Hispanic literature.
Corpi's latest work, Death at Solstice: A Gloria Damasco Mystery, combines themes of Latino culture with a suspenseful mystery. Limón's most recent novel, The River Flows North, is about a group of Latino migrants' dangerous journey to the United States.
Author Ray Villareal presented in a session, "Out Loud and in Your Face: From Slam Poetry to Read-Aloud," along with educator Karen Locke. Ray Villareal is the author of three books for young adults: My Father, the Angel of Death (Piñata Books, 2006), Alamo Wars (Piñata Books, 2008), and Who's Buried in the Garden (Piñata Books, 2009)?
